A memorial service has been held at a major cathedral in Coventry, central Britain, to mark the 78th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Japan marks the 78th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima with its mayor using the occasion to urge the abolition of nuclear weapons. Hiroshima is in the spotlight again as Russia raises the spectre of using nuclear weapons in its war with Ukraine. At an outdoor memorial ceremony, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui told the 50,000 participants that the Group of Seven leaders notion of nuclear deterrence was a "folly", a notion which Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agrees with.

The city of Nagasaki said Aug. 6 it will change the venue for the ceremony to mark the 78th anniversary of the city's atomic bombing due to approaching Typhoon Khanun and hold it indoors for the first time since 1963.

A Smithsonian museum is planning to display photographs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the wake of the U.S. atomic bombings in the closing days of World War II as part of a forthcoming exhibition.
