In the US, we tend to think about fear of nuclear war as a quaint relic from a bygone age. With wars and potential wars between nuclear-armed states across the globe, that is hardly a realistic outlook.

While India is celebrating an upward trajectory of economic growth combined with ecstatic euphoria through the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya it would be foolish to remain oblivious to the upheavals of a tottering civilization.

Last week, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) reset the Doomsday Clock to 90 seconds before midnight. This is the closest the clock has ever been to midnight since 1974 and for the second year in a row. This is yet another wake-up call for humanity demonstrating that a business-as-usual approach will no longer work.

The Biblical “Doomsday” alludes to the end of the world in general. It isn’t exclusive to Christianity, either; the Mayan calendar, for instance, predicted that the world would end on 21 December 2012.
