Rare ’51 Grange sets new world record at auction
July 20th, 2021
A rare bottle of Penfolds Grange 1951, which was signed and recorked by Max Schubert, has gone under the hammer at a Langton’s auction for $142,131, breaking the previous record of $103,000.
The world record bid for the wine marks it as the most expensive bottle of Australian wine ever sold, and at the price of $141K, makes it roughly worth more than $28K per glass.
The bottle is one of the few rare examples in existence of the first vintage of Penfolds Grange ever made, and went under the hammer at the Langton’s Penfolds Rewards of Patience auction which closed on Sunday night at 7pm (AEST).

A rare bottle of Penfolds Grange 1951 that is made even rarer having been signed and re-corked by hand by Chief Winemaker and creator of Penfolds Grange Max Schubert is expected to break the world record price if it sells at the online Langton’s Rewards of Patience auction this month.
“This bottle is one of a kind in the world, and I’ve never seen anything like it in my more than 20 years in fine wine. We expect it to go under the hammer for around $120,000 if it sells,” said Langton’s Head of Auctions Tamara Grischy.
A complete Penfolds Grange set has sold for a record $431,000

A complete set of Penfolds Grange has just sold for $430,000 in the Langton’s Penfolds Rewards of Patience auction – a world record price.
Christmas came early for a Sydney wine lover who successfully won the bidding war of the coveted set, which contains all vintages of Penfolds Grange from 1951 to 2015 (64 bottles in total).
“This Penfolds set is unique because some of the bottles are signed by Max Schubert, Penfolds first Chief Winemaker and the man behind Penfolds Grange. Many of the older vintages have also been certified in the Penfolds clinic,” said Langton’s Head of Auctions Tamara Grischy.
