And hearing really centers around this motion that his lawyers with the Innocence Project filed with the court. In that motion, they say that Scot Peterson has maintained his innocence for 20 years. And during that time, hes been working with investigators and lawyers theres and has discovered what they call this substantial new evidence which you had actually referenced earlier. We dont know what that evidence is, but they say that it does support his claims of innocence. So theyre looking at but the dna, they want some items tested again, retested, and then they also want some new items, new new items tested for dna and they think that there is something they are anderson that could prove his innocence. So we really dont know what to expect tomorrow. We know for sure that no doubt will see more motions filed, more hearings in this case before we know exactly if Scott Peterson will get a new trial. The leaders of eight South American countries that share the amazon, have gathered in the city of belem. Scientists are concerned that, deforestation in the amazon may be approaching an irreversible Tipping Point. Brazils president Lula Da Silva is hoping for a co ordinated regional approach, to tackle illegal mining and logging as well as other environmental crimes. Our reporter Azadeh Moshiri looks at whats at stake in the summit. The amazon is, of course, beautiful, but its also hugely important in the fight against climate change. And thats because it stores so much carbon dioxide, which drives the Climate Crisis were currently facing. And yet the forest is under threat of deforestation. Now, 60 of it is located in brazil, which is why the country is taking the lead in hosting eight other countries in south america who share the amazon.
The amazon from reaching, quote, a point of no return. The lengthy roadmap outlined in the city of belem promotes sustainable development, an end to deforestation, and fighting the organised crime that fuels it. Lets take a look at whats at stake the amazon stretches nearly Seven Million square kilometres, or nearly Three Million square miles. About two thirds of that is in brazil. Another seven countries and one terrority share the remaining third. Under brazils former president jair bolsonaro, years of deforestation in the amazon worsened. The orange on this map shows the areas of deforestation between 2019 and 2022 in the state of para, where the summit is being held. But new data shows a positive shift. Deforestation in the amazon fell by 66 last month compared to the year before. Its now at its lowest rate in six years. Our correspondent katy watson is at the summit in the amazon, and has more. Diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the crisis have stepped up a gear with a warning from washington. Speaking to the bbc, the us Secretary Of State Antony Blinken has voiced his concern that nigersjunta might turn to the Russian Mercenary Group wagner for help. The group is active in neighbouring countries and its leader has welcomed the takeover. The coup leaders are currently Standing Firm against calls to restore democratic rule.
