Rescue work to reach the 40 trapped workers in the Uttarkashi tunnel has been halted due to a technical snag in the drilling machine.

The operations to rescue the over 40 workers stuck inside the Silkyara Tunnel at Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand resumed on day five on Thursday. Officials in charge of the rescue work said the American auger machine, flown in from Delhi on Wednesday night, has already been installed.

The machine penetrated around 12 meters inside the debris on the second half of the day. The rescue team has undertaken both the exercise simultaneously - horizontal drilling as well as inserting steel pipes to expedite the process for making a passage for the safe evacuation of the 40 trapped labourers. By 4.30 pm, the team had successfully inserted a 9-meter pipe inside the debris.
