The Facebook Empire Here’s a recent headline to ponder from the Beltway-buzzy Axios: “The sovereign state of Facebook vs. the world.”  The sovereign state of Facebook?   Did we miss something there?  Did we miss that moment when Facebook became a country and joined the United Nations?  Axios was exaggerating, of course; Facebook is not a sovereign state (although it does plan to issue its own currency).  So yes, Facebook  is huge and powerful, bidding to be a key partner in what...

As research for my novel, The Manningtree Witches, I read dozens of accounts of women (and some men, but mainly women) accused of maleficium, or witchcraft, in 16th- and 17th-century Europe. These accounts are touchingly formulaic: they begin with a woman, usually poor, often past marriageable age, visited by the devil, who offers his power in return for her soul. They are an invaluable resource for understanding the dimensions of women’s lives at this time in history. Their concerns are lim...

Top Ten Best Ancient Historians History is very important and I cannot overstate that. In our times of early writing we had men, yes mostly men, that would record the events of the time that gives us a clear image of what happened, the people of the time, and the culture. These Ancient Historians would form history. This list will feature the best of these historians. For the sake of practicality I will not be including religious writers. Feel free to add them though. Feel free to add whoever y...

Managing EFCC: Open Letter to Abdulrasheed Bawa As much as ‘we’ fervently want you to succeed, many factors that are akin to landmines are on your way to success. ADVERTISEMENT I write this nameless open-letter because I am afraid I might be tagged a sycophant or be labelled an opportunist by people because I am a serving officer. The most important thing to me is to remain nameless while I let the whole world know how much we will want you to succeed using the prism of the rule of law. Sir...

The month we know today as July used to be known as Quintilis. It was the birth month of Julius Caesar, the Roman general assassinated by his frien...

Article content The case of Jonathan Bradley, a fourth-year student at Ryerson University and a contributor to the student newspaper the Eyeopener, from which he claims to have been fired because of his rigorous adherence to a conservative version of Roman Catholicism, raises a number of broader questions about the status of freedom of expression in Canada. The matter is now before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, which will be invited to comment on the extent to which people are free to e...

Historic Letter Written by Pontus Pilate to Tiberius Caesar? I found this letter while looking for other things. The premise of the letter that Pontus Pilot supposedly wrote, is to inform the Emperor, Caesar Tiberius, about the incident that happemned in his Province of Judea. He elaborates how there was some trouble with the Religious leaders over a certain Prophet of their God. Concerned about the affairs of his Province, he sending a messenger to Jesus with a letter. The letter invites Jesu...

Jakub Shlayfer opened the door and walked outside to go to work. Before he could shut it again, his wife called after him: “ Alevai it should be a good day! We really need the gelt!” Alevai, Bertha. Omayn,” Jakub agreed. The door was already shut by then, but what difference did that make? It wasn’t as if he didn’t know they were poor. His lean frame, the rough edge on the brim of his broad, black hat, his threadbare long, black coat, and the many patches on his boot soles all told ...

How Augustus rebuilt Rome The collapse of the Roman republic, and the establishment amid its rubble of the rule of the Caesars, constitutes the primal political narrative of the West. In 49 BC, a system of government founded on the conviction that the only conceivable alternative to liberty was death spectacularly imploded. The claim of Julius Caesar, the greatest general of his day, to a primacy over his fellow citizens resulted first in civil war, and then – after he had crushed his dom...

By Steve Donoghue Correspondent So persuasive, so memorable, is the artistry of William Shakespeare that devotees of his plays who are only casual skimmers of history might be surprised to remember that it wasn’t just Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius who assassinated Julius Caesar on the Ides of March in 44 B.C. Despite the fact that they’re the only two being forever gnawed in the jaws of Dante’s Satan at the heart of the Inferno, it was actually a small crowd of senator...
