The UK project to set a new land speed record will try to get back on the road with a new driver.

It’s not uncommon to see people tinkering away at their cars in the driveway on a weekend in the Perth suburbs.  But drive past Rosco McGlashan’s Mullaloo home and you might look twice.

Using nothing but the Australian desert breeze, a high-tech carbon land yacht is preparing to exceed 202km/h.

In 1994, McGlashan set the current Australian land speed record of 500 mph. He then tried to top it the next year, but endured an unfortunate accident at South Australias Lake Gairdner salt flats when he hit metal timing equipment at about 600 mph, only 30 mph from the world record. In 1997, unsafe salt conditions required him to scrub his next attempt in a third vehicle, which allowed Green’s ThrustSSC team to claim victory.
