A trade group for U.S. authors has sued OpenAI in Manhattan federal court on behalf of several prominent writers accusing the company of unlawfully training its popular artificial-intelligence based chatbot ChatGPT on their work.

Several legal novelists, including John Grisham and Scott Turow, are among 17 authors joining with the Authors Guild in a proposed class action lawsuit against the artificial intelligence program OpenAI.

At Disrupt 2023, one of the co-founders of Runway, Anastasis Germanidis, said that his company is considering ways to tackle the challenges around copyright and generative AI.

US authors, including George RR Martin and John Grisham, sued OpenAI for copyright infringement when it allegedly utilized their material to train the ChatGPT system.

“At the heart of these algorithms is systematic theft on a massive scale,” the group of authors, represented by the Authors Guild, said in the federal court
