Experts in presidential and U.S. labour history say they cannot recall an instance when a sitting president has joined an ongoing strike.

President Joe Biden plans to visit Michigan on Tuesday in a show of solidarity with striking United Auto Workers against Detroit automakers.

The United Auto Workers union has escalated its fight with some of Americas biggest carmakers by taking strike action at dozens of parts distribution centers across the US. Besides, pay hike, they have other demands too.

The president of the UAW said the union will expand its strike against major automakers by walking out of 38 General Motors and Stellantis plants in 20 states.

The United Auto Workers strike against Detroit's "Big Three" automakers enters week two.

Workers from 38 GM and Stellantis parts and distribution centers across 20 states walked out at noon Friday. However, it was business as usual for the GM plant in Wyoming.

General Motors and Stellantis announced fresh layoffs Wednesday that they blamed on damage from the United Auto Workers strike.

UAW President Shawn Fain announced Monday night that more plants will go on strike if "serious progress" isn't made by noon on Friday, Sept. 22.
