Cowlitz County commissioners approve funds for Kalama River restoration project By Katie Fairbanks, The Daily News Published: March 10, 2021, 10:20am Share: Longview — The Cowlitz County commissioners Tuesday approved an agreement to shift $50,000 from the road fund to help the Cowlitz Conservation District with a restoration project along the Kalama River near Camp Kalama RV Park. Camp Kalama is located at 5055 Meeker Drive, just south of Interstate 5 exit 32. The project includes installing a wooden structure along the eroding bank to improve stability, help reduce fine sediment, create habitat, restore first migration and improve water quality, according to the preliminary design documents. The project will also include planting forest riparian buffer vegetation between the roads and the river’s edge.

Agencies eye Cowlitz River dredging to lower flood risk By Katie Fairbanks, The Daily News Published: February 21, 2021, 6:03am Share: LONGVIEW — Local, state and Army Corps of Engineers officials are planning to dredge the Cowlitz River to lower flood risks until the dam holding back sediment still flowing from Mount St. Helens is raised. The Corps Portland District also is looking for ways to pay for river monitoring that would help develop the agency’s long-term sediment plan as well as update the assessment of flood risks for communities along the river. Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler and U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell on Thursday urged the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Department of the Army to include funding in the 2022 fiscal year budget for sediment monitoring.
