World War Two was started by Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland on September 1, 1939. Two days later Britain and France declared war on Germany after Adolf Hitler refused to abort his invasion of Poland. WW2 was fought between two groups of countries - the Axis Powers and the Allies. The war lasted six years and ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. On 8 May 1945, the Allies accepted Germanys surrender, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide.
