On the contingent of youths arrested by Amotekun in Ondo

Share LAST week, tension reportedly gripped residents of Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State following the arrest of youths from the northern part of the country by men of the Ondo State command of the Western Nigeria Security Network, codenamed Amotekun. The youths loaded in a truck were reportedly intercepted in front of the Okitipupa Army Barracks at about 10p.m. on Thursday last week and taken to Akure, the state capital. Residents of the town were said to have gathered at the scene, expressing apprehension that the youths were in the town to cause havoc. Accosted by the operatives, some of the youths reportedly jumped down from the vehicle and ran into the town, but about 45 of them were arrested. When interrogated, the youths said they were sent from the North to undergo military training in the barracks. Confirming the incident, the state Commander of the corps, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said investigations had commenced into the incident.

Odusola stated this barely 24 hours after the state government returned 45 northern youths, who were apprehended by the men of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, to their home towns. Odusola posted his allegation on his Facebook page on Sunday, adding that his independent findings showed that the Fulani men had been given an open land in the barracks to build shelters.

  Ondo State Government has ordered men of Amotekun Corps to escort 42 men apprehended in Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area out of the state. The men, who were of northern extraction: from Kano and Jigawa States were said to have arrived in the town on Thursday evening. The arrival of the men created suspense and apprehension among the residents of the town who quickly alerted the security agencies. When interrogated, the men said they were brought into the state by a non-profit organisation to undergo training as security agents at the Nigerian Army barracks in the town. However, the authorities of the barracks did not give them access because there was no signal to that effect from their headquarters.

Residents told one of our correspondents that the gunmen stormed the community in large numbers around 2am and operated for hours. One of them, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “They abducted our village head and wounded his younger brother on the thigh. They kept on shooting during the operation.”
