Pianist, and the President of the Fellowship of Organists, Babatunde Shosanya, has urged the government to commit more funds to the music sector. He said, “In Africa, music is part of our culture. It has been historically proven to invoke thought in society, and expresses life in all aspects through the medium of sound. Music can influence people in both negative and positive ways. Music plays an important role and is a powerful force in human society. Listening to certain music has also been shown to improve mood, increase productivity and encourage intellectual growth.
“Having established how powerful music is, the best way for the government to commit more funds to it is to begin from the foundation, which is music education. Government should provide adequate funds for the purchase of musical instruments and other education resources. Untrained and unqualified teachers should not be allowed to teach music in schools.”
