if you want any of this to become legislation, it needs to be palletable to democrats as well. i hear you loud and clear, i m the chairman of the main stream caucus, 70-80 pragmatic conservatives who want to get things done. we re acutely aware of what you re saying, jake. there are areas of common ground, i don t know how anybody in the senate or the house can look at 200 folks crossing the border a year, and say that s fine, we don t need to do anything. . increasingly, democrats are coming to me and saying, we have to do something about the border, inflation, crime and drugs in our cities. there are things to get done. but, to get anything done, republicans, we ve got to get our act together because committees can t form and legislation can t move forward without a speaker of the house. will this end with a speaker mccarthy or might it end with a speaker scalise? still, far and away, the
regulatory agenda of this administration. so we know we have to get on with electing a speaker so we can actually advance our agenda. i am floating a few ideas with those members who have voted against speaker mccarthy to continue to try to find reforms that would bring them along and to up fyunify the cop conferenc. most of the grievances relate to k a access or fair access to appointments to committees but no member should have special treatment so we could do a few things to the steering committee process to give the caucus a seat at the table and tuesday group, the moderate members each a specific representative adele get to the staring come mittee everybody feels they have a fair and equal shot at committee
the breaking news this hour, the house of representatives, has adjourned until 8:00 p.m., eastern, later today. as the house, specifically, house republicans remain dead-locked over a choice for house speaker, let s bring in republican house congressman. mccarthy, has now lost six times in a row, what s next? well, you could look at this that way or look at it from the perspective that kevin mccarthy won the vote among republicans over 200 members to 20, six times. and, it doesn t take a rocket scientist or a mathematician to figure out there s a landslide victory in the republican conference, but not enough to earn the speakership, just goes to show this is a lop sided to elect kevin mccarthy as speaker of the house. and when is the last
quorum vote, if all 434 on a vote for speaker vote for a candidate, the magic number again would be 218 to get elected speaker. that more immediate dynamic that you are talking about right now potentially on a motion to adjourn, it s going to be very interesting to see how this is understood by this group of 20 republicans who have refused to back mccarthy, who backed jordan on the third ballot. if they view it as mccarthy needing another day to try to twist arms, to try to make deals, as almost a desperate move by mccarthy to buy time, that motion to adjourn vote becomes a test from these 20, how committed are they to basically finishing off kevin mccarthy? the vote wouldn t officially be for speaker. but the stakes would be mccarthy s best chance of becoming speaker. if his side thinks getting
one of the reasons and paul cane put this very well in the washington post this morning. is that, what kevin mccarthy love is is campaign strategy and tactics. and to alissa s point, he failed at the tactics of getting himself the gavel in the house, which means he failed at the things he s best at. and those failures began, perhaps with the mid-term election but went right up to the conference meeting yesterday morning. it s important to note there s a lot of distrust, too, between scalise and mccarthy s camps. there s a whole other layer to add to this conversation here. the house of representatives is taking a break until 8:00 p.m., we re not. but, this does happen after six defeats, for republican leader, kevin mccarthy, trying to become the speaker, up next talking to a current member of the republican conference aboutut the stalemat
