Feb 4: A momentous day in Language Movement

On February 21, 1952, a meeting of students began at Amtala (now Dhaka Medical College and Hospital). Gaziul Haque presided over the meeting.

In a book launch held at the capital’s Bengal Shilpalay today, Gyantapas Abdur Razzak Foundation and University Press Limited held a discussion session on Professor Razzak’s Political Parties in India, his 1950 PhD thesis for the London School of Economics, published now for the first time in book form. 

Badruddin Umar may not necessarily be a very popular person. That statement is a little ironic for two reasons. First, he is the pre-eminent “popular” (people’s) scholar and second, given his tastes and preferences, he would probably wear that judgement as a badge of honour.

A small incident took place at a school in Burdwan in 1944. A class teacher of Grade 7 was wrongly reprimanding a student, accusing him of stacking all the high benches of the classroom against the short ones the previous evening, when a lanky boy stood up and said, “It was not Abanti, it was me.” Impressed by the boy’s moral courage, the teacher excused him.
