want as robust tourism as possible. but my most important priority is that floridians are safe and we are doing what we need to do to assist after the fact. this is a storm that is a record in terms of the 185-mile-per-hour impact of the baham bahamas. and it s very, very close to our shores. i appreciate the tracks that keep it off the shore. but we re going to have some impacts one way or the other. and that s really i think the main concern. we will be able to people will want to can many to florida. there will be time to do that stuff. we have a lot of great things going on with the economy. but safety really is number one. we obviously will be monitoring this the rest of the day. we have resources ready to go. the feds have been great. they have a lot of resources ready to go. hopefully by don t we will have
competition. i want to bring in one of the locals pondering the decision whether to stay or go. this is my friend david over here. you have lived here since the 1960s. what s on your mind today? are you leaving? are you staying? for now we are going to stay until we find out the official track and see what that does once it hits the gulf stream. so that could change. . you see what happened in the bahamas. you see the forecast now. is there anything that will prompt you to leave today, you think? what are you waiting to hear? since it is moving so slow, we have the opportunity to take a little more time to decide mr. we re going to stay or go. . is there anything about this storm in particular? you have opinion through so many. what concerns you? it concerns me. i want to have the safety of my family in mind the whole time.
we have clear air in some parts. that doesn t mean you should leave. stay sheltered, hunkered in. the eyewall is where the strong winds come in and they are coming in quickly. hopeful little they will take a northeastern turn. 160-mile-per-hour winds. they were up to 185-mile-per-hour winds. that s a little bit of good news. maybe a little wind shear as well. moving west. parked over the bahamas. they have until tonight before they see some relief. remains a category five throughout the day. by tuesday, category 4 storm. still a major hurricane. stays a major hurricane. also on wednesday and thursday. it s not until friday where we see a cat 2 storm. a landfall along by the coast. cape hatteras. we will watch that. it will move off north and east. it is moving very, very slow.
that is good news. terrible news for the bahamas. i want to mention that. good news for florida because the slower pace gets the steering currents in place. there s a lot of folks up and down the coast who want to know what is happening. we will not know until the turn take place. we have the hurricane watches and warnings in place. listen to your local officials and evacuate and heed the warnings. we could see gusty winds as early as today. michelle grossman tracking dorian. thank you so much, michelle. for more in the storm region, joining me is the spokesperson for the american red cross. bill, thank you so much for joining us today. this is a category 5 storm heading for the southeast. it is uncertain.
tracking dorian s path. that guy is watching to see exactly writ is going to go. . the local officials know your county in and out. there is very low-level areas there. listen to your evacuations. we had tropical storm warnings, hurricane warnings. if you are told to evacuate, i would evacuate. the window is closing. let s talk about the bahamas. some did not evacuate. we had a rough 36 hours so far. we have until tonight before we see some improvement. it went right through marsh harbor. rain and wind. we will continue to see that over the next five takes at least. let s tell you where we are in terms of the latest stats. location-wise, 30 miles east-northeast of free port and grand bahama island. they are in the bullseye.
