Bangladesh government begins to forcibly remove Rohingya refugees The Bangladesh government has started shipping Rohingya refugees to the isolated and unsafe Bhasan Char island, 34 kilometres from the mainland. At the same time, as the result of an intervention by China, Dhaka is again also seeking to send Rohingyas back to Myanmar, from where they fled the regime’s genocidal violence. There are over one million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheik Hasina’s government considers them a burden to the country, and has branded them a “security” threat. They are treated inhumanly, condemned to live under miserable conditions.
