FEMA Approves More than Half a Million Dollars to Entities that Protect Women

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved nearly $550,000 for nonprofits that offer services for women who are victims of domestic violence. These allocations include $400,000 for three permanent repair projects and other allocations for emergency work following Hurricane María.
According to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau Statistics Office, 6,170 incidents of domestic violence were reported on the island in 2020. Recovery encompasses a myriad of sectors that positively affect the safety and well-being of our communities. Certainly, these allocations help these entities to continue their work for the benefit of our country , said Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands José Baquero Tirado.

This is Maurstad s first visit to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands since being assigned to his position. Our top priority is to reduce disaster suffering, and this visit reinforced our commitment to our partners to ensure that we achieve results. As a result of this visit, we have strengthened our priorities with our partners, which puts us on the path to success, said Maurstad.
FEMA Assigns Over $10 Million for Elderly Homes

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – With the purpose of contributing to the well-being and health of the elderly, FEMA allocated over $10 million for 31 permanent repair projects for senior centers around the island.
The funds will serve 24 facilities under the administration of the municipalities that are dedicated to the care of this population and another 7 that belong to private non-profit entities. According to the U.S. Census, there were about 680,000 people aged 65 and older living in Puerto Rico in 2019. Older adults represent one of the most vulnerable populations during an emergency. It is imperative to take their needs into account during this historic recovery process, said the Federal Disaster Recovery Coordinator for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, José Baquero Tirado.
