PhilSys registration site, General Santos City (Photo courtesy of PhilSys-Veranza Facebook) DAVAO CITY - A series of Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) registration recently concluded in some villages in General Santos City. Purok Dr. Acharon and Purok Calatao in Barangay Tambler accepted applicants for the Philippine Identification (PhilID) on December 8 and the Sr. San Roque Chapel in Purok 23, Phase 4, Barangay Mabuhay on December 11. Registration for five years old and above also opened in Barangay Apopong on December 9 to 18. The registrants are now part of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data of 50,014,382 Filipinos who have completed Steps 1 (demographic) and 2 (biometrics) as of Dec. 11. The biometrics process collects iris scans, fingerprints, and front-facing photographs. As registration continues, PSA reminded the public to observe health and safety protocols in all registration centers, including bringing of own pen. Signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in August 2018, Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, aims to establish a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident aliens. The national ID shall be a valid proof of identity that shall be a means of simplifying public and private transactions, enrollment in schools, and the opening of bank accounts. It also seeks to boost efficiency, especially in dealing with government agencies where people will only need to present one ID during transactions. (PNA) }
