Throwback Thursday: Barnes Auto becoming the Truck Store
Steve Harmon
Today s installment of Throwback Thursday takes us to the unit block of South Washington on the west side.
The Barnes brothers, Harry and Clarence, started an auto parts business in 1918 in the old Woodmen Insurance building at 22 West Sherman. Business went so well they expanded into 24 W. Sherman in 1919. Harry eventually left the business and Clarence kept expanding the business to include an installation and auto salvage division.
In 1937, the Clickner Const. Co. built Barnes a new modern business building at 15-25 South Washington. This business existed for 34 years.
Barnes Auto closed in 1952 and in 1954 the Scheufler Supply Co. moved in there. They sold auto, industrial, construction, and oil field supplies. In 1971, they became a division of Big A Auto Parts. In 1997, Mike Stucky had a machine shop there.
