A suspected gun-carrying man in northeast Prineville raised concerns and prompted a local school to lock its doors Friday.
On Friday morning at approximately 10:30 a.m., Prineville Police, Crook County Sheriff s Deputies and Oregon State Police responded to the area of Northeast Laughlin Road between Ochoco Plaza Drive and Combs Flat Road to a report of a male with a hunting rifle walking around in bushes behind local businesses.
This area consists of unimproved areas next to Ray s Food Place complex, Crook County School District offices, and Crook County Department of Human Services (DHS) offices as well as residences and nearby Barnes Butte Elementary School.

The Crook County School District board recently voted to move forward to add six new modular classrooms at CCMS
The Crook County School District School Board voted on Monday, March 8 to move forward with leasing three, two-room modular classrooms at Crook County Middle School for three years.
Also, at the Monday evening board meeting, there was discussion on a number of other upcoming projects that need to be addressed, as some elementary schools are nearing full capacity as well as the Crook County Middle School.
Crook County School District Superintendent Dr. Sara Johnson presented a PowerPoint on behalf of the construction committee to address the challenges and opportunities for CCSD and address the needs of classrooms in the various grade levels and schools.
City adopts Barnes Butte area concept plan February 23 2021

Right now, the city-owned Barnes Butte property is mostly comprised of trails, grasses, junipers and sage brush.
Visitors can find remnants of an old farm near a gravel parking lot, and some educational signs have been installed in the nearby area. But none of the trails are paved, and no rest areas or other improvements can be found.
But that doesn t mean a plan for future development doesn t exist. In fact, a plan was recently adopted by the Prineville City Council late last month that will help guide future improvements and additions to the land.
