It has been more than 20 years since we started planting apple trees in our tiny orchard in Bayfield. This year’s harvest, though small, afforded us tasty treats some so beautiful that I photographed one, a Harlred from one of the few trees that produced well in an otherwise off year. I marveled at the wonder of it on December’s Solstice Day, that it could spring forth from our hard red clay and be crisp and juicy. Harlreds are an offshoot of the Harlson, slightly sweeter and a bit deeper red with fewer yellowish striations.
