2021 Memorial Day events on the Seacoast NH, southern Maine

Dover  Woodman Museum annual Memorial Day Tribute, Monday, May 31, 11 a.m. at  Pine Hill Cemetery at the GAR Monument, 137 Central Ave., Dover. (Enter at the Central Avenue entrance to proceed to the top of the hill). Ceremony will include brief remarks, a wreath laying, a Taps  performance by the N.H. National Guard and a Civil War cannon salute. Following the ceremony, packets will be available detailing six of the city s many Civil War soldiers who were killed in action and buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitors are encouraged to visit their graves and pay their respects. At noon, trained artillery experts will conduct a Civil War cannon firing demonstration at the lower Pine Hill Cemetery fields (south of South Watson Road).

1,100 flags and a reverse parade : Memorial Day 2021 in York ME

By Camille Fine & Dan Bancroft The York Weekly YORK VILLAGE, Maine  In preparation for Memorial Day, the Committee for Veterans Affairs, local veterans organizations and community members assembled Friday afternoon to place nearly 1,100 flags alongside veterans graves throughout First Parish Cemetery. This year, for the first time in recent memory, Gold Star mothers had flags placed on their graves too, according to cemetery superintendent Todd Frederick, who is also a member of the Board of Selectmen. “We’re really excited to honor the mothers of Gold star recipients, Frederick said. They deserve to be recognized.”  Police Chief Charles Szeniawski was among those to participate.

York selectmen laud town clerk, reaffirm anti-racism stance

YORK, Maine In what is likely to be her last appearance before the Board of Selectmen in her role as town clerk/tax collector, Mary-Anne Szeniawski graciously accepted the board s remarks of gratitude Monday night. Szeniawski, who has served the town since 1979, said she shares credit for all her good work with Deputy Clerk/Tax Collector Mary Indiano, who is retiring after 40 years of service. Behind every good woman is a good woman,  she said. Szeniawski, who announced in January that she won t seek reelection, appeared before the board Monday to provide an update on protocols to be followed in the May 22 election. Public health precautions will remain in effect, including social distancing of 6 feet and mask-wearing strongly suggested, Szeniawski said. Only two people declined to wear masks at the town s polling place during last fall s election, she said.
