Power company seeks bankruptcy protection after storm; Brazos Electric serves parts of Bell, Milam and Falls counties

The largest and oldest power cooperative in Texas is filing for bankruptcy protection, citing last month’s winter storm that left millions without power, and it is unlikely to be the last utility to seek shelter in the courts. Brazos Electric Power Cooperative serves distributors that supply electricity to more than 1.5 million Texans in 68 counties from the Panhandle to Houston. Brazos said Monday that it was a “financially robust, stable company” before the Arctic freeze that hit Texas between Feb. 13 and Feb. 19. The cooperative’s service area includes parts of southern and eastern Bell County as well as parts of Milam and Falls counties.

Killeen reader asserts city, county officials were unprepared for storm

Be prepared. That is the moto of the Boy Scouts and what should be a watchword for most everyone in Killeen. YOU are responsible for yourself and your family. The city, county and state can’t possibly take care of each and every individual and family in Texas. It is obvious that the city has no plan. Posting things to a web page and Facebook certainly does not help the people who were without power for days. No real plan other than requesting water from the state is not a viable plan. Why wasn’t the city looking for supplies — like water — on Feb. 5, instead of waiting until there was a problem? But, in the final analysis, you are responsible for yourself and your family.
