another convincing victory. difficult terrain, both historically and politically. for this to happen, for democratic senator raphael warnock to win in a state otherwise dominated by republicans, particularly the cycle, for him to win for the second time in two years while his party is currently holding the presidency, while, it requires a lot to have gone right for the democrats, and a lot to have gone wrong for the republicans. that was actually true for the midterms and general. in fact, this election in georgia, both elections, this runoff particularly, sort of a perfect microcosm of the midterms as a whole. right? and the republican side, the person everyone is blaming today, correctly, is donald trump. he was, after all, donald trump's idea to recruit herschel walker for no other reason than because he appeared on his game of celebrity apprentice. trump has known him for years, and herschel walker played football in georgia, although he had since moved to texas. but that's about it.
results in georgia, and the fact the state one of two democratic senators, at least for 2020 sex, was a long time to make it. the product of a lot of hard work on the ground in the state by some people you might not recognize. we were there all the way back in 2014, almost nine years ago, thailand about how a bunch of folks in georgia were setting in motion a plan that could make this moment happen. >> what if i told you that georgia, deep red georgia, could be a blue state? and it's all a matter of simple math. >> they're 600,000 unregistered black people in the state, and 230,000 unregistered agents and latinos on top of that. and if we could just sign up 750,000 of them, it be almost impossible for the republicans to win again. >> organizers say there are roughly 830,000 unregistered voters of color in the state. they can register 90% of them,
legislative agenda, that the democratic party and president biden have pursued? >> look, i think that is a lot to do it. obviously, every election is complicated. many factors. but i think the popularity of what we've done these two years really stands at. you can look at the warnock race as an example. senator warnock ran largely on two things that were part of our agenda here. capping the price of insulin at $35, which we achieved for senior citizens in the inflation reduction act for congress adjourned for the summer, and secondly, taking on student loan debt relief and having that ten and 20,000 dollar plan to rollback student debt, which the president did by executive order this summer. so he's one example. he and other senators run on the infrastructure bill, one of the chips -- the progress we made things to the rescue plan. one of the pack back, the billion acted to help veterans. we've had a very busy legislative and policy first two years. i think that gave people a lot
you're the foremost expert in america on why 50 1:49 is better than 50/50. so from years perspective as that expert, explain to us why it matters so much. >> yeah. the bottom line is 51 is so much better than 54 a bunch of races. first, in terms of appointments. when it's 50/50, it takes a long, procedural, torturous road to get candidates for judge, or administration positions moving forward. we can do it a lot more quickly. by the way, chris, one of the things were proudest of as we put more good, strong, progressive people on the bench than anyone has. we are over 80 judges now we put in place. that can speed up and leave the republicans blocking -- so many important moments. ambassadors, cabinet, sub cabinet members that are needed going forward. second, our committees -- now, we have a majority. that means we can pass more legislation, at least through
manufacturing things. you heard him say for two years his presidency, and so many of his speeches, where is it written that america can't be a great manufacturing nation again? this is what brought him to politics. this is what brought him to the white house. so we've been relentless about the idea that we should make things in america again. we should create six figure jobs for people who don't have a four year college degree. making the products of the future. making electric cars. electric batteries. making high tech semiconductors. and we should do that because it's great for our jobs and it's also great for making sure we're not dependent on foreign sources for these key supply chain issues. one thing we saw as we came out of the pandemic was all kinds of shortages of chips, of key elements to make cars. we had a lot of backlogs and tie ups and i systems. as a result, prices went up.
faced twice, which was have the congress adopt disagreement, which not only gave a lot of benefits to people in the railroad industry, but the alternative was a potential rail shutdown, hundreds of thousands of people, a lot of them unionized, losing their jobs, particularly in the auto industry another manufacturing industries, communities losing their access to clean water because they wouldn't have the chemicals to put in the water, hospitals shutting down -- i think in the face of that catastrophic alternative, the president believed the best thing for the largest number of working people, including unionized working people in the country, was to have congress adopt the agreement. >> final question, and quickly on this, is the white house looking into any executive action that could possibly deliver six for employees given that the railroads are a big federal conduct? >> always looking at ways to expand paid leave, that's what the president said when you put this proposal before the congress. and all ideas to expand paid leave, not just for people who
i think reassuring these jobs, these manufacturing, makes our country strong, it makes our national security strong, it makes our job market strong, and creates a lot of good union jobs. the president is the most pro-union president we've ever had. he wants to create the kind of manufacturing jobs that people can raise a family on, that we can build economies around, that we can build the country around. >> we mention the presidents pro labor record, which i think speaks for itself, although i've gotta ask you about the railroad strike. obviously, there was a majority of the workers represented voted against that deal that had been negotiated by the biden administration. the president urged both houses in congress to pass, and they did, legislation that essentially force the deal whether the workers wanted or not. but a lot of workers who say they are angry, you see the problems with our current rail system -- is the sort of just in time model that has cut down 30% of the labor force, as people going to god knows where at 2
quite significantly, particularly in areas that are economically struggling, and because of that, inflation and the worldwide economic problems are kind of piling up on top of the things caused by the pandemic. i think it's a purpose fixed storm of factors that will make a lot of people feel that they need to look for, kind of, extreme politics, and particularly on the right, where certain charismatic leaders sort of stand ready to harness them. >> yeah. i feel like this is a global phenomenon. thankfully, and germany, as you said, it's not as easy to get your hands on a firearm. this come tree is unique in the fact that the lethality is much higher. -- thanks for filling us in on that really frightening development in germany. that's tonight's read out, everybody. thank you for tuning in. all in with chris hayes starts right now. all in with chris hayes st arts right now. >> tonight, on all in. will you help me draft herschel
recent years. almost every candidate has had troubled periods. i think walker is completely electable. he's actually ahead at the beginning of this race. and we're fully behind him. every candidate has flaws. and assets. this candidate has a lot of assets, and is very competitive, as a great chance of winning. >> listen to mitch mcconnell. mitch mcconnell was behind herschel walker. mitch mcconnell -- donald trump really screwed us here. now, we have the tape. okay? and that's part of what made this entire enterprise such a bizarre spectacle from the beginning. it's like a test of the level of cynicism in american politics for all these people. with large and influential platforms. graham, mitch mcconnell, sean hannity, just day after day, night after night, to the cameras, with a straight face, herschel walker is a great candidate. herschel walker should be a u.s. senator. everyone knew he was not, including, thankfully, enough
what do you say to those workers who say the president says he's pro labor, but he hung unfit to dry? >> first of all, what i'd say is the agreement we're talking about -- this organized labor access to a point -- that produced a proposed settlement. that wasn't getting the. we went back to the table, and made the railroad industry give even more concessions to workers. and in the end, the agreement reached between labor and management was ratified by -- eight of the 12 unions involved here. it gave a 26% pay hike to the people who work in the industry. gave health care benefits. really solid permanent health care benefits for the first time in this industry. and gave unpaid leave digs to some of the workers who've never had that benefit before, you were actually penalized for even just taking off and unpaid day. so i think the agreement made a lot of progress for a lot of the key issues for working people in the industry. was it perfect? absolutely not. but in the end, the president faced twice, which was have the congress adopt disagreement, which not only gave a lot of benefits to people in the
