The Israeli security cabinet has approved a "war situation" and significant military actions in response to a terrorist assault from the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the country is at war after Hamas launched a surprise attack, firing rockets into southern and central Israel. Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari called the attack a war crime and stated that those involved will pay the price.

At the same time, the Polish leader urged not to "overestimate the seriousness" of the situation in Israel, saying that it is not the first military conflict in the Middle East over recent decades.

After a year of unprecedented events, Israel’s political and constitutional turmoil came to a head on Sept. 12, when the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a critical case that will determine the future of the Netanyahu government’s judicial overhaul. The arguments concern the so-called Reasonableness Amendment, passed by Israel’s parliament in late July; this amendment to the country’s Basic Laws would partially strip the Supreme Court of its authority to review governmental acts.
