Minister Gwede Mantashe has accused the Lesotho government of "economic sabotage" following the deaths of 31 suspected illegal miners.

The government has been notified by Lesotho of the deaths of at least 31 suspected illegal miners in a ventilation shaft at Virginia mine in Welkom, Free State.

Thirty-one suspected illegal miners are believed to have died at a ventilation shaft at a mine in Virginia, Welkom.

SA Government is seeking different options to retrieve the miners' bodies after inspectors detected high levels of methane gas in the shaft

The comments come as South African authorities scramble to recover 28 bodies in a ventilation shift at an old mine in the Free State.

At least eight bodies of suspected illegal miners have been discovered by the Gauteng police in Germiston.

On Friday, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe accused the Lesotho government of “economic sabotage”.
