The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the appointment of German conductor Jun Märkl, 61, as its new Music Director. He will commence his tenure from the beginning of the 2021 season.

His directorships include the Nationaltheater Mannheim (1994-2000), Orchestre National de Lyon (2005-11), MDR Symphony Orchestra Leipzig (2007-2012) and the Basque National Orchestra (2014-17). It’s been just over 18 months since R. Douglas Sheldon, better known simply as Doug, left Columbia Artists as it chairman and just over three months since that onetime behemoth of a classical music agency subsequently went belly up.
Now Sheldon is back, as the managing partner of Sheldon Artists, LLC, and managing many of the artists he worked with during his five decades at CAMI.
Leading the conductor roster is Valery Gergiev, along with the Mariinsky Theater, of which Gergiev is artistic and general director. At the top of the violinists list is the previously announced Anne-Sophie Mutter, as well as rising young Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma.
