More than 20 artificial reefs have been deployed in Sarasota Bay. The hope is for them to flourish and create a new habitat for commercial and recreational fish. 

Contingent on federal funding, the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program plans projects to improve oyster habitat, reduce erosion and bolster storm protection.

Area scientists are hopeful that the bay’s water quality will continue to improve but warn it’s not time to slow efforts.

Research shows that plastic floating in the seaweed contains high levels of flesh-eating bacteria.
