Western governments have been silent on the Income Tax surveys at BBC offices in India. Reporters feel abandoned.

There was no reaction to the 'survey' – which comes weeks after the BBC aired a two-part documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi – from the UK government.

Jagdeep Dhankhar remarked that the dumping of information was a form of ‘invasion’ and said that there was a need to boldly neutralise it.

His remarks come against the backdrop of a political debate triggered over the BBC recently airing a two-part documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots and India

The survey was carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, reported PTI.  

Several of the newspapers have said that by targeting the BBC, the Modi government may have undermined India's global democratic credentials.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Tuesday said the action shows whosoever raises voice against the central government will be crushed.

The news agency PTI said that while there has been no official statement from the UK government on the "survey", sources said they are “closely monitoring" the situation.

As the income tax survey at BBC's offices in Delhi and Mumbai entered the second day, the broadcaster issued a fresh mail to its employees, asking them to cooperate with the tax officials.
