California’s Mono Lake is a success story among struggling saline lakes. Environmental advocates went to the California Supreme Court and argued the state wasn’t meeting its public trust obligations to protect the lake.

Mono Lake’s advocates successfully argued that protecting natural public resources held equal importance to LA’s need to export water. Advocates say “every drop matters.”

The Great Salt Lake shrunk to historic lows this year and water levels continue to drop. The largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River supports mineral extraction, recreation, brine shrimp and migratory birds.

Some archaeologists from the University of Utah are helping prepare the site of the Bear River Massacre in Idaho to be restored to what it once was.
