“The Nevers,” an offbeat sci-fi series on HBO about Victorian women fighting against nefarious forces, is a Joss Whedon show.
That’s important to know at the outset, both creatively and culturally (and you’re not going to hear it from HBO). And that alone may be enough to turn some people away.
Whedon, who created shows including the brilliant “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and the (hot take) overpraised “Firefly,” and directed some “Avengers” movies, has been accused of unprofessional behavior and creating an abusive work environment, both in his recent projects but also dating back to “Buffy.”
The Nevers Is Entertaining But a Tad Overstuffed

An apparently lavish budget gives the worldbuilding a huge assist; the costumes, production design, and vaguely steampunk gadgets and flourishes provide ample amounts of Victorian eye candy, though there’s often an issue of wanting to look too many places at once (and since this is HBO, the visuals include a not-insignificant amount of nudity, in case you have any kids around who’re intrigued by the premise). The HBO sci-fi drama “The Nevers,” from the mind of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon, debuted its first trailer on Tuesday. The series is scheduled to premiere in April.
“The Nevers,” which was ordered straight-to-series in July 2018, is an epic science-fiction drama about a group of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies and a mission that might change the course of world events. The series unfolds as the group attempts to uphold the rights of the underclass and protect those who are like them.
