governor to take on disney in florida? it s highly unusual to see an out and out fight between one of the most powerful and important companies in the state. political insiders say the battle is really over florida s new parental rights and education law. which opponents, including some vocal disney employees, call the don t say gala. disney s ceo initially noncommittal saying after it was signed into law, our goal as a company this is not based on the demands of california corporate executives. disney s special self governance allows the company to provide many of its own services, like fire departments, road construction and building
many of tourists responsible for billions in revenue, but behind the scenes disney s operates in what is essentially its own government. florida governor, ron desantis, wants to undue that self governance, and some say that s pay back for the don t say gay law. pressuring state lawmakers to repeal disney world s unique self governing authority, and that date backs to the late 60s. they will be considering the termination of all special districts enacted in florida prior to 1968, and that includes the reedy creek improvement district. how unprecedented is it for a
districts and how that works, and reedy creek is at least a billion in debt service, where if this goes away, and the taxpayers would have to eat that and look at a tax increase, and on the other hand there are properties there that could be taxed at perhaps higher rates and maybe make up for it. it s a thorny mess. if you open up a box of snakes, it would go everywhere. one legislature that wrote this law being passed right now, it gives them 15 months to decide if they really want to do this, or 13 months, i should say. reedy creek would disappear, and disney s special district would disappear in june of 2023, and that gives them a lot of time to decide do we really want to do this do we really want to break this and buy it under the pottery barn rules. they will find that out. and it puts disney on notice, a
and zoning. today i want to share with you some of our ideas for disney world. without reedy creek, historians believe it s unlikely uncle walt would have realized his dream in florida. it s political, the governor and republicans in the legislature, at least many of them seem to be trying to punish disney. disney is about twice the size of manhattan, and for another reference, the size of san francisco. we reached out to the counties that currently disney sits on to see if they could take on the responsibilities if the florida legislature decides to eliminate the reedy creek district, and it s hypothetical so essentially we got no comment. that s pretty big for one little part of florida. and florida rejected math textbooks from next year s state
