Opinion: Belarus keeps unemployment low despite pandemic
MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) - The unemployment rate in Belarus is lower than in many European countries, Belarus' First Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security Andrei Lobovich said during a roundtable hosted by the Belarus Segodnya publishing house, BelTA has learned.
According to him, the overall unemployment rate in the country is 4%, which is low. Belarus took the measures during the pandemic to keep the figure within the acceptable limits while many countries imposed lockdowns, halted the economy and shut down the production and services sectors, which drove the unemployment rate up.
“If we compare the unemployment rate in Belarus and in European countries and highly developed world leaders, we see that it is the lowest in our country. According to the latest data, the unemployment rate in the European Union is 7.5%, in the US - 7.9%. The situation is similar in the neighboring states: in Lithuania it is at 9.8%, in Ukraine - almost 10%. The measures that our state took to support enterprises and households during the pandemic, played their part," Andrei Lobovich said.
