The alleged kingpin of the Eskom prepaid electricity voucher scam, who is unemployed and owns no business, received cash deposits totalling more than over R6.1m from unexplained income sources.

The 12 individuals accused of defrauding Eskom by creating fake prepaid electricity vouchers bought houses and cars for themselves and lived comfortable lives.

Properties and cash worth R29m belonging to an alleged syndicate that is accused of stealing from Eskom have been frozen.

The ghost vending operation was allegedly initiated in 2012 by Mothelli Ben Theletsane, who was employed by Eskom.
