The three-tier panchayat elections were conducted in West Bengal in July last year. During the panchayat elections, incidents of violence occurred from the very first day of the nomination process. A total of 55 persons died in poll-related violence.
It was alleged that a Trinamool Congress candidate, Mahadeb Mati, from Habra in North 24 Parganas district swallowed four ballot papers after he found himself trailing the CPI(M) candidate in the last round of counting.
Speaking to mediapersons after meeting the Governor, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “I have requested that the life and property of people should be ensured. Besides, action should be taken against the police where the violence took place.”
