A decision not to allow the opposition Democratic Party to compete in the local elections has been overturned, in a small victory for the divided party's official leader, Enkelejd Alibeaj

The official opposition Democratic Party has been blocked from running in the May local elections over a legal technicality – which can only help Prime Minister Edi Rama's governing Socialists.

After Friday's court ruling failed to resolve who leads the biggest opposition party, both rival groups announced they will enter the next elections with their own candidates – deepening the divisions.

Tirana's Court of Appeals has accepted Enklejd Alibeaj's request and ruled the retrial in the long leadership battle case within the main opposition Democratic Party.
