A roundabout in New Bern which was originally scheduled for last October has now been tentatively postponed until July, 2028. This is the travel circle that was planned at the MLK/Neuse Boulevard intersection in front of the Taco Bell at 1815 Neuse Boulevard.
The roundabout was set to replace a red light at the intersection to improve traffic flow and was originally drafted in 2015. It was scheduled to take six to nine months to complete.
Kim Maxey, New Bern Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) administrator, said “We thought the intersection is a little awkward with the number of lights and access to medical personnel.” The intersection is within a quarter mile of CarolinaEast Medical Center. She noted that the planned roundabout was significantly larger than the one at Broad and East Front streets and would include slip lanes allowing some traffic to bypass the circle altogether.
