The findings could help close a loophole that enables the government to avoid considering greenhouse gas emissions impacts on animals.

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Polar bears have long symbolised the dangers posed by climate change, as rising temperatures melt away the Arctic sea ice they depend upon for survival. But quantifying the impact of a single oil well or coal power plant on the tundra predators had eluded scientists, until now. A new report published in […]

A new study has found a direct link between human-caused greenhouse gas emissions and the survival of polar bear cubs.

Polar bears rely heavily on the sea ice environment for hunting seals, travelling, mating and more. Read more at straitstimes.com.

Scientists have, for the first time, quantified a direct link between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and polar bear survival. The report “Unlock the Endangered Species Act to address GHG emissions” provides a template for estimating the demographic impact of proposed GHG-emitting actions on polar bears—overcoming a loophole in the Endangered Species Act (ESA) that has historically blocked climate considerations. The approach outlined in the paper connects the dots between greenhouse gas em...

Polar bears have long symbolized the dangers posed by climate change, as rising temperatures melt away the Arctic sea ice they depend upon for survival. When sea ice melts in summer, they retreat onto land or unproductive ice far from the shore, where they endure long stretches of fasting.
