(RNS) — Five congregations ousted this week were the first to be expelled from the SBC on a national level for having women pastors since the ban on women pastors was instituted in 2000. 

Saddleback Church, the California megachurch kicked out of the Southern Baptist Convention on Tuesday over its decision to ordain women as pastors, is expected to appeal the expulsion this summer at the 13.7 million-member denomination's annual business meeting.
