Students at Webster University are protesting budget cuts and a pay raise for the school's president and chancellor. The faculty voted "no confidence."

The faculty of Webster University issued a vote of no confidence amid growing criticism of how university leaders have managed the college through financial turmoil.

The Webster Groves Campus Faculty Senate of Webster University on Sept. 19 voted “no confidence” in Chancellor Beth Stroble and President Julian Schuster. The vote was 59 to 41.

Webster University students called for a quarterly report on university spending, higher pay for faculty and staff and public succession planning, among other things.

"Chancellor Stroble is committed to working with the board to ensure that a thoughtful and thorough process is engaged to identify Webster’s next leader," Verma said in the letter.

Letter: If one puts aside the virtue-signaling about diversity, equity and inclusion, one sees that Webster University operates more like a global capitalist enterprise than a non-profit liberal arts college.

The chair of Webster Universitys board of trustees defended the private college on Thursday, saying the plan to boost enrollment and revenue is working.

The board that represents Webster University staff on Friday called for closer scrutiny over the compensation the colleges top leaders have earned.

Chancellor Beth Stroble and President Julian Schuster are among the highest paid university leaders in the region despite plummeting revenues and lower student enrollment.
