Surat: A group of leaders from the diamond industry met labour and employment minister Balvantsinh Rajput on Tuesday with various demands for workers .
The union said it wanted to raise various issues, including the financial crunch faced by diamond polishers. Police were also on the lookout for other members who could not be traced, said officials.
India sees lab-grown diamonds as a path to prosperity and economic independence. But for Surat’s diamond workers, the picture is more complex. Can the industry become profitable for all?
A diamond dazzles and more often than not, it is also indicative of the standard of living of the person who wears it. Sadly, it in no way reflects the ups and downs the artisans, cutting and polishing the diamonds, go through.
