Says Hasina; 10-day celebrations begin

The history of the people of this land is that of repression, of colonialism, and of being ruled and looted by foreign forces. So, their struggle for liberation and self-rule was something that was the most sought after.

From the familyâs young âKhokaâ to the dear âMujib bhaiâ of his political comrades, from the valiant âBangabandhuâ of the student leaders to the towering hero of the masses this is Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of independent Bangladesh. At the age of 51 he established an independent nation, and at 55, he met his tragic death in a brutal assassination. Today is his birthday.
One hundred years ago, on 17 March 1920, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born to the Sheikh family in Tungipara, Gopalganj. Exactly 50 years ago, in March 1971, he gave the call for freedom. In response to his call, the people rose up in the liberation struggle and 3 million people laid down their lives for independence won in just nine months. He built up the people for this fight and over the years, he built himself up too. This leader spent 14 years of his life in prison.

The country starts its 10-day celebrations of Mujib Borsho and golden jubilee of independence today with colourful events and presence of global leaders.
The celebrations have been planned to coincide with the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh s Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971. The celebrations will end on March 26 on Independence Day.
The occasion is well worth a celebration and the government has arranged countrywide programmes to mark it, given the country s socio-economic progress in the last decades and its important place in the global arena.
Different countries as well as experts have lauded Bangladesh, which has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. It is well on track to graduate from a least developed country (LDC) to a developing one by 2026.
