Train collision in India's Odisha, one of the deadliest accidents in the country, led to a significant loss of lives. At least 261 people have been killed, and the toll may go up further, while over 900 have been injured. Such devastating accidents highlight the need for robust safety measures and the continuous improvement of infrastructure and operational protocols to prevent train collisions and ensure the safety of passengers and railway personnel.

An indigenously developed technology that can prevent two trains from colliding was showcased on Friday. What is Kavach, and how does it work? What's new?

Railway Minister Vaishnaw spoke about Kavach as a very advanced system, better than the European Train Control System (ETCS) used across the world.

The Kavach system is designed to bring a train to a halt automatically when it notices another train on the same line within a prescribed distance.

The Odisha train accident is the first such pile-up on Indian tracks. Since 1993, 28 parliamentary reports on the railways have been presented along with a safety report that highlighted need for a system like Kavach to detect on-course collisions
