we saw a lot of curious onlookers. people who didn t heed evacuation warnings in place. they decided to come and see what the water was up to. take pictures and i got an opportunity to speak to some of them. there was almost a collective sigh of relief. if you recall three days ago there was a category 4 hurricane aimed right at this location. now with know the hurricane is scraping by. still a lot of impact for the coast communities. but good news evacuation order are lifting. they have been lifted in the county to the south. we have the evacuation orders in port st. lucy. tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m. people can return home. we know that we have a long night ahead of us with the tropical storm force winds as they come through. and as you said earlier, as this storm decreases you can see people here trying to take
i want to talk about the hurricane. that s been such a focus. the intensity of the hurricane seems baffled the u.s. president. i m not sure i have heard of a category 5. i knew it existed. and i have seen some category 4. category 5 is something that i don t know i have ever heard the term. other than i know it s there. that s the ultimate. that s what we have. so the president has repeatedly forgotten how big a storm can get. and in this case, also where it was going. saying alabama was in the path. how confident should american people be that the president is on top of this? even from the links. the biggest problem here, you take him at his word and says category 5 existed and now we re dealing with one. what does that point you to? asking why there are now so many of our hurricanes are becoming
great to have you. part rs of the bahamas are facing absolute devastation from hurricane dorian. this storm moved slowly over the island sitting over them. hitting some areas over and over again. you can see look here, the destruction here. obliterated. homes are gone and roads and hospitals. at least seven people killed in the storm isn t over yet. everyone buildings left stranding face a baa ranl of wind and flooding. desperate people braving chest deep waters to reach high ground. saving loved ones and kids. it s devastating. after seeing what dorian has done. u.s. is preparing for the storm. the category 2 hurricane is picking up speed. and size. as it moves north. georgia and florida are seeing wind and rain from the outer edge of dorian right now. dorian is not expected to make land fall there.
which is a strong category 2. and beyond that into thursday evening. even then barely weakening. 105 miles per hour wind before it skirts off to the northeast. national hurricane center and local authorities taking this very seriously. hurricane watches and warnings. widespread across the region. of course the area with the high etc. potential for land fall which would be around the carolinas. where the storm surge threat is the highest. around 7 feet at its max. look at this observation forecast into thursday. this is charleston harbor. river potential crest up to ten plus feet. that second highest we have ever seen. go back to hurricane hugo 1989 to have the highest crest at 12 feet. it shows you the wind speeds category doesn t really place a significant role at this stage. it s a broad storm. before it exits to the right and everyone will be impacted by
of destruction in its wake. islands once known as paradise are now in ruins much the storm has battered the bahamas for days. these aerial images give us a sense of that. drowning entire neighborhoods, smashing apart houses. there s still reports of people trapped on their roofs, but rescuers are having trouble getting to them. so far at least seven people have been killed, though that number is expected to rise. and as hurricane dorian moved away from the bahamas, it has weakened somewhat as you can see from these images, but it s still a powerful, powerful storm as it starts to move up the eastern coast of florida. forecasters predict dorian could make landfall in south carolina later on this week. so you re watching cnn s breaking news coverage of hurricane dorian. we ll continue to monitor all the twists and urn turns. i m robyn curnow. much more news right after this. every day, visionaries are creating the future.
