Hopelessly I gazed up — at heavy cloud. That’s 2020, I thought! But it reminded me of another winter night in 1968 when I was just 22, hearing that Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the Moon, had entered lunar orbit. The impossible had happened. We were witnesses to history. I’ll admit I rather went into orbit myself last Thursday, hearing that Boris had pulled off a Brexit deal. Nothing is perfect (ever!), yet we have achieved a historic deal which seemed impossible. Rejoice Yes, the...

December 18, 2020 Expedition 42 Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency relaxes on board the International Space Station on December 25, 2014. NASA On December 25, 1968, the staff of mission control at NASA received confirmation of a long-rumored and hotly debated phenomenon. Over the crackle of a transmission coming from space on Christmas morning, astronaut Jim Lovell disclosed what must have been one of the most closely-kept space secrets of the entire program: ...

Time Person of the Year covers for Rudy Giuliani, St. John Paul II, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, John F. Kennedy, Pope Francis and the astronauts of the Apollo 8.  Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are Time magazine’s Person of the Year! Disregarding Time’s terrible grammar (even Christians don’t call the Trinity one person, you philistines), it is a moment Catholics should be proud of, for it is only the 15th time in 108 years that a papist took the crown. Who cares? Catholics do. We’re alw...

Is hot and cold on it. what is the allure there? >> the allure is this, it only takes three days to get there, so the ability to build a lunar base and to do scientific exploration there, is logistically an easy, feasible thing. if you think about mars, which bill anders told me who took the famous earth rise photo which really changed the world and changed all of us, he was a nuclear engineer and he said look, what we have not solved yet is the problem of radiation, deep space radiation. so on ...

Other. with the spacecraft on the top with three guys on it. and you knew that that sucker was going someplace. it had a purpose in mind and it was going someplace. >> you get to december of 1968 and frank and bill anders have been training to fly the first flight around the moon. >> we kind of feel that this flight set the pace to begin the lunar landing apollo program. >> the countdown to liftoff for apollo eight is t minus 50 minutes and counting. this will be the first manned flight of the s...
