The Missouri Senate on Tuesday night fell into an intramural fight among Republicans over whether to use the budget to put limits on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in state government.

After nearly 12 hours of debate, the Missouri Senate passed a $50 billion budget early Wednesday morning. 

Senators argued over an amendment to bar state agencies from spending money on DEI.

The Senate’s proposed budget is $4.2 billion more than what the Missouri House passed weeks ago. Like in the House, most of the debate in the Senate was spent over an amendment that would have inserted language against diversity, equity and inclusion.
