Barbara Gay Walz was born December 1, 1929 to Fred and Rose Nitz. She was raised on a farm near Rothsay, MN. Following her graduation, she obtained her teaching certificate and began teaching in one-room country schoolhouses in the Perham area, where she met her husband, Xavier (Eggs). They were married August 30, 1948 at St. Stanislaus Church in Perham.
