Memories shared of VE Day

The anniversary of VE Day was remembered at Rivermead care home in Norton. Staff dressed in wartime fashion, while residents, wearing their Union Jack hats, shared memories of May 1945.Audrey reminisced about the years of blackouts and patrolling Home Guards barking, ‘Put that light out!’. Another resident told of the wonder when, at the end of the war, everything was suddenly lit up. ‘Streetlights were on again, and my father drove us to Bishopthorpe Palace in York with his headlights on full all the way. A spokesperson for Rivermead said: After lunch, tea and cake were served, and Vera Lynn’s emotive songs played in the background. All in all it was a wonderful way to celebrate the joyful emotions at World War Two s end, a time still vivid for some.
