The government has cleared about 110 applications of the 111 requests received for allowing imports of laptops, computers and other IT hardware products so far, an official said.

The Indian government is considering asking importers of IT hardware to provide an international certification, attesting that their products are from trusted sources. This move is in response to concerns raised by countries such as China, the US, South Korea, and Taiwan about Indias restrictions on the import of these products.

India plans to implement end-to-end digital authorization systems for select IT hardware imports, specifying quantity and value until September 2024. The government aims to streamline the import process, with the new rule allowing imports by authorized firms.

The new system will come into force from November 1, but importers were allowed to apply for import authorisation from Thursday. There will be no restriction on quantity, value, country or origin. The Cantre will not reject any import requests and will use the data only for monitoring.

IT Hardware: As of now, all companies can bring unrestricted supplies into India and the government will only start monitoring the inbound shipments as part of an import management system from November 1. But restrictions in terms of inbound shipments will come into effect from October/November next year and companies will get quotas.

IT hardware manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, and Acer have sought to know how to calculate the cost, insurance, and freight value of some of these products which are imported to India as completely built-up (CBU) units.
